Grand Gulch, in #BearsEarsNationalMonument, Utah. President Trump notified Senator Orin Hatch last week that he will be taking @repryanzinke’s advice and will be moving to shrink the Monument down, by some reports, to approximately 160,000 acres from 1.35 million. On assignment for @natgeo this week looking at this heated battle over public lands. The story is very complex and layered here on the ground.

Another view of this ancient double granary, which was created by the Ancestral Puebloans roughly a thousand years ago in what is now #BearsEarsNationalMonument, Utah. The ruin is relatively unique for being both freestanding and for having no door. Shot on assignment for @NatGeo magazine.

#BridgerJacks, #IndianCreek, Utah sunset storm tonight! On assignment for @natgeo.

Even when you know that many travelers have come before you to these same ruins it still feels like an incredible adventure rounding the corner and seeing them for the first time. This ancient double granary was created by the Ancestral Puebloans roughly a thousand years ago in what is now #BearsEarsNationalMonument, Utah. The ruin is relatively unique for being both freestanding and for having no door. Shot on assignment for @NatGeo magazine.

Sunset a few nights ago! After 7 visits to this unnamed granary in #BearsEarsNationalMonument, Utah I got some incredible light! These structures, built by the Ancestral Puebloans, could go back to anywhere from 1 to 1300AD. In August Secretary @RepRyanZinke announced his recommendation to shrink several National Monuments set up by Presidents Clinton and Obama including Bears Ears. The sources briefed on the report have told reporters that, in the days leading up to the announcement, Zinke had been considering a dramatic reduction to Bears Ears, to approximately 160,000 acres from 1.35 million. What are your thoughts on the potential changes to the Monuments?

Sunrise over #ValleyOfTheGods, #BearsEarsNationalMonument, Utah. Yesterday Interior Secretary @RepRyanZinke announced his recommendation to shrink several National Monuments set up by Presidents Clinton and Obama. The sources briefed on the plans said that along with Bears Ears, Zinke had proposed to the President reducing the size of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, also in Utah, and two others yet to be named. Reporters have been told that in days leading up to the announcement, Zinke had been considering a dramatic reduction to Bears Ears, to approximately 160,000 acres from 1.35 million. I will be returning to Bears Ears and other Monuments on assignment for @natgeo magazine over the coming months. Stay tuned for more.

A hiker thinks twice before attempting to climb down old Moki steps (hand and foot holds carved into the near-vertical sandstone) once used to access the ruins now called the Eagle's Nest in #BearsEarsNationalMonument, Utah. The ruins are anywhere from 800-2000 years old. #MokiSteps can be found all over the American southwest, and were carved by the Ancient Pueblo Peoples and other related cultures. With a potential fall of a couple hundred feet, this hiker chose not to enter the cave. Shot on assignment for @natgeo magazine.

A cowhand lassoing a calf at a branding on Dan Probert's ranch near TNC’s #ZumwaltPrairie Preserve in Oregon. This story, shot for @nature_org, shares the lives of both ranchers and field scientists who are all playing important parts in preserving the Pacific Northwest’s largest remaining expanse of bunchgrass prairie, a vital habitat for hundreds of plant and animal species. This is a controversial subject to many but without a doubt the healthiest and most integrated beef operation I've ever seen. Now, if you don't eat beef that's probably not comforting.

Climbing friends, we need your help! #MatoTipila (Also inappropriately call #DevilsTower) is NOT to be climbed in the month of June. This is a voluntary closure made out of respect for the Native community that gathers there for vision quest, to fast and pray. Rangers at the monument have been reporting some rather disturbing news: The rate of climbers frequenting the tower during June has steadily risen each year since the voluntary closure was implemented 20 years ago. They are urging climbers to help raise awareness to the wishes of the native community and urge people not to climb in June. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB at the tower this month. If you know climbers in or around the region or anyone planning a trip this month please tag them. This image of @authormarkjenkins was taken in July after the closure is lifted. Please show some respect for this sacred gathering place and plan your trip for another month.
